length limit for the exclude-regex string ?

Hello,

Is there a particular limit in the length of the mirror:exclude-regex 
variable ?
I'm using it to exclude directories from the mirroring, as the wget's 
exclude_directories directive, and I'm afraid the string might become 
too long if the number of directories is high.

Or is there another way to implement the exclude_directories functionality ?
