Sexual minorities warn of agitation against 'discrimination' November 19, nepalnewsmobile.com http://www.nepalnewsmobile.com/2007/nov/nov19/news14.php
Gays, lesbians and transvestites, who earlier used to take out peaceful parades in the streets of Kathmandu to make their presence felt, have this time vowed to wage a protest movement if the government doesn't ensure their representation in the Constituent Assembly (CA) election. At a press meet organised at the Reporters' Club in the capital city Monday, representatives of the gay community warned that they would be compelled to take to the streets if the state continues to discriminate against them. Organising a press conference, the Blue Diamond Society, a Kathmandu based NGO working for the welfare of the sexual minority in Nepal, put forward a three-point demand before the government: proper representation of all Nepalese gays, lesbians and transvestites in the CA election; guarantee their right to vote like any other Nepalese men or women; and citizenship certificates to them mentioning them as 'third sex'. Sunil Babu Panta, chairman of the Blue Diamond Society said that the 'third sex' have been discriminated against, oppressed and socially ostracised from a long time and that now they are in no mood to tolerate thus any longer. "We would be compelled to wage street protest and even picket Singha Durbar if our demands are not met," Panta said in a matter of fact way. nepalnews.com ag Nov --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "lgbtdiscuss" group.
