As for surround channel definitions, I think I agree with you. But we would need to change how we write the WAVE channel mask. Currently our channel_layout values try to mirror what is supposed to be used in WAVEFORMATEXTENSIBLE dwChannelMask. Having generic "surround" channels would mean that we have to map to different WAVE masks based on both the channel_layout and codec_id. That's fine with me though.
