lcov is a visualizing tool for the coverage data provided by gcov.
They go hand-in-hand. Explaining this seems out-of-scope to me at time
of writing, but now that you raise the question, I'm no longer so sure
about that. May I suggest that you try to use it for a couple of days
and share your experiences in form of additions to developer.texi?
