As a matter of fact, I've heard complains that squashing mostly-cosmetical changes and actual code is troublesome to some developers, in particular if you only commit part of their patchset. Maybe you disagree with that (because of more work for you rather than them, coding style believes, ...), and are ok with impeding contributions to libav in that case, I don't know. But, in that situation, doing so may have the additional benefit of clearly resolving attribution when there are people caring.
