Strange, works for me (with a couple of warnings; I guess one could pass
-b xll to get the right branch checked out right away):

  $ git clone http://www.southpole.se/~nisse/libav.git
  Cloning into libav...
  * The requested file was not found* The requested file was not found* The
requested file was not found
  warning: remote HEAD refers to nonexistent ref, unable to checkout.

First time I've tried to set up http git (for lack of some other
infrastructure for public repos at southpole). I just created a bare
repo in a directory on the web server, created a post-update hook as
described at
http://git-scm.com/book/en/Git-on-the-Server-The-Protocols#The-HTTP/S-Protocol,
and pushed my branch to it over ssh.

Regards,
/Niels
