There turned out to be a bit more than just one issue to fix to make this work, but it seems to work ok for me now - I'll post the gas-preprocessor patches and once they're in this shouldn't be any technical obstacle for merging this any longer.
I've got a few minor details that need to be fixed in your patches though, but nothing major.
