While I don't fully agree with the wording that "is required for the
operation", it's a feature that IMO makes sense to keep - in case you need
it, it's really hard to achieve without this field.
IIRC you need it if you want to attach any private data that should
follow along with the frame through the decoder frame reordering and all
that - normally this only is done for the pkt_pts field (and this is what
most people need), but in case you need to track more data than just the
pts, you can put it here (and if necessary, the int64_t should fit a
pointer as well).
IIRC Vladimir used to have a use for this - I hope he can elaborate on
exactly what it was.
