So, what was wrong here, why didn't the well-intended change work? It'd be
really nice if that was documented anywhere to prevent people from doing
the same mistake again. Ideally in the commit message or in a comment in
the code (like I did for the vfwcap change), but since it's already pushed
it's too late for that, so documenting it here in the ML archives probably
is the best we can do.
