I don't know that any application developer ever cared about binary compatibility between libav and FFmpeg. A number of developers try to keep source compatibility with both sides, but what would be the point of binary compatiblity? It seems rather unlikely that someone would want to run-time switch. Besides, libav regularly breaks binary compatibility with its own self, making the issue largely moot.

I think this is really a matter for FFmpeg developers to decide. But if I were them, I would definitely not waste my time^W^W^Wcare for binary compatiblity.
