Can it be quicker and less resource
hungry by altering the following command?

            :~$ /usr/local/bin/ffmpeg -i /link/to/music.mp3
            -i /link/to/video.mp4 -vcodec libx264 -crf 23
            -vf subtitles=/link/to/subtitles.srt -strict -2
            /link/to/muxed.mp4

This is missing console output but at least
-preset ultrafast (and friends) come to
        mind.

This command will (if I understand correctly) transcode your audio. Using "-c:a copy" will copy the audio.mp3 into the muxed.mp4 container. Same thing with "-c:v copy" as the video.mp4 is (obviously) already in an MP4 container, it should be a trivial matter to mux the two streams into a single MP4.

Sorry, what do you mean by missing console output? This command
    does output to the shell.

It would help us even more if you could provide what your console outputs when the command runs.
