Maybe you know, that FFMPEG's configure script has "--enable-gpl" parameter (hope I'm correct with its naming). Just try to configure FFMPEG without this parameter and build FFPLAY. Does it play what you need? This will be the answer. Am I wrong?
You are right, but I was hoping somebody would have a list of formats it could not play without being GPL-enabled, if any.
