Isn't PIX_FMT_BGR24 supported as well? I haven't tried yet, but it
seems it should be possible to make ffmpeg itself convert regular
windows bitmap to whatever it needs via sws_scale/sws_getContext


If you are generating the bitmap images programmatically, why not generate them in YUV format?

It's not too different to thinking about colour in RGB as it is in YUV, some people find YUV easier than RGB to think in. Especially if you are doing grayscale.

I'm not sure what you are doing with colour, but just as knowing that yellow in RGB is 255,255,0
yellow in YUV would be something like 240,0,128
