https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/224399 Uli - you sir are a genius. Installing libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio solves this for me. Might be worth adding that to the Ubuntu 9.10 install notes in the wiki. I don't think I have access to do that myself.
