I came across a patch to vcdimager in VCDMeta
(http://kevin.atkinson.dhs.org/vcdmeta/)

Under a vcdxbuild option, it changes MPEG file extentions to .MPG
rather than .DAT. As Herbert Valerio Riedel points out, doing this is
quite a bit hackish, since the resulting files are not plain MPEG
(program) streams, but most likely end up encapsulated in the
Microsoft Windows OS into some kind of additional container.

It is weakly rumored that changing the .DAT extension would help on
"Mac" (unspecified OS version). Can anyone verify?

GNU/Linux can't read VCD .DATs, since the kernel doesn't support
sector sizes not a power of 2.

Anyone care to comment on the usefullnes of this .MPG hard-link hack
and whether it should be included in the next vcdimager?

Thanks.
