The hardware itself is starting to age, but I will +1 the (baseband free) 
Galaxy Player. The camera and battery life are both good, and hard to match in 
that price range. You can upgrade it to Android 4/ICS as well.

I used it as my primary "phone" for months both with secure voip (OStel) and 
not so secure (Skype and Google Voice). I had a mental map of open wifi areas 
on my general daily commutes and had a mifi hotspot (Ting.com) for backup.
