It appears Apple is ending the default inclusion of OpenSSL in OS X. I am not familiar with how these decisions are made, so I may be misreading the post (first link below) and the Hacker News commentary (second link). The post says "The crux of the problem is OpenSSL doesn’t offer API compatibility between versions." But the post appears to say Apple decision-makers are still open to including OpenSSL if certain issues are resolved.
