From: Alex Zaheer <azah...@stanford.edu> Hey everyone!
We're hoping to participate again this year in the *Atlantic Cyber 9/12 cyberpolicy competition*, description found here <http://www.atlanticcouncil.org/programs/brent-scowcroft-center/cyber-statecraft/cyber-9-12>. The idea is that some sort of "Cyber 9/11" event occurs, and the competitors are the policymakers on the next day (9/12) that try to advise the President on how to put the pieces back together. The teams are given a scenario for which they must write a policy brief from the prospective of an analyst looking to present the President with their possible response options. Then, teams fly out to DC on competition day (this year* March 17 and 18*) to give an oral presentation to a panel of judges that are usually pretty high up in the cyberpolicy field. For example, in last year's competition, an unknown actor compromised our GPS systems by infiltrating a third-party defense contractor connected to the DoD network. They gave a bunch of geopolitical background (to give a sense of which country would have a motive to hack the US), as well as the technical details of the hack (as far as was known at the time). We wrote up and presented an initial brief, and because we advanced to the second round, during the competition we were given an update to the scenario and came up with a second brief in 24 hours. It's a really fun competition, and a good introduction to policy writing. The competition is close to finals, however personally flying out to DC as a end-of-the-quarter break was definitely a worthwhile break. Shoot me an email ASAP if you're interested. It should be pretty dope! Alex Zaheer -- -------------------------- Alex Zaheer azah...@stanford.edu (c)858-956-4060 <(858)%20956-4060>
