it wasnt what the collateral moslem believed that made them a target its what they clearly didnt believe: that western freedoms are too decadent to be associated with. the target of bali: a bar nightclub. the ultimate western symbol of freedom of booze music and god forbid inappropriate associations betwen males and females. any moslems present where probably simply trying to make a living or having some fun. the exact nationalities of foreigners present was irrelvant the effect on tourism a huge bonus. the london bombing organiser had plenty of military targets just a week or so before the london bombing with the congregation of a massive naval fleet in england. they ignored that and they ignored the olympic win annoucement and they choose the opening of g8 instead. the target are ordinary people going to work during rush hour. my prediction is this will get much worse before it gets better, the irony is that islamo facists are in fact accelerating the very things they fear the most, the emancipation of women in islamic society. the separation of church and state. the marginalisation of islam in a modern secular middle east. this anticipated massive loss of power is being countered by the current symbolic displays of raw macho force and control. the london bombers where not acts of desperation but controled acts by moslems trained in martyrdom factories around the world to carry out a job on command without question, not unlike pretty much every other soldier. the liberties and freedoms we take for granted are considered decadent evil by hard core moslems and the undercurrent of support for "jihad" reflects the fear of imminent loss of power of islam in the middle east not from israeli/US troops but from the inevitable tide of modernisation and globalisation. the current targets in iraq are not so much US troops other then as symbols of the arrival of modern secular society. and that in my opinion is what is gnawing away at the back of the mind of the jihadist.
