Hi Tim,
I am new to this group as well. I hear you in being non-conformist. I, too,
consider myself more libertarian than anything. I am also attracted to some of
the stuff done by Norm Kurland and the Center for Economic and Social Justice
(CESJ) which expands on Loius Kelso's work by expanding the ownership society
while limiting the power of the state. The Carey Center--of Ray Carey fame and
his book Democratic Capitalism also has things I like.
I live in Texas by way of Washington (state). More Southwestern than Southern,
I guess, but Sunbelt just the same. I am married have two older daughters, a
cat and a dog. Actually, I wonder if there may not be a golden opportunity to
transform one of the two big parties. I have come to believe that liberalism
and conservatism as we have known them in the last century are dying. But like
a medically fragile elderly person with dementia, they can still do alot of
damage.(If you have ever had one of said persons dig their fingernails into
your arm, you know what I mean).
How cool would it be to promote an approach to politics which is Green,
Libertarian and committed to expanding the ownership society at home and abroad
through some of the methods promoted by CESJ and the Ray Carey people! My only
concern about third parties is that they rarely go very far. At best, their
platform gets absorbed into one or both of the two big parties. The Republicans
replaced the Whigs, but then they became a coalition of several smaller parties
which became the Republicans we know today. That would mean groups like the
Libertarians, Greens, and others would have to do some serious talking,
coalition building, and come to agreement on common principles, then on
strategy--by the way, I think it could be done, however purists in all camps
would bulk at such a suggestion. Just some thoughts. As one newbie to another
