I am afraid it is going to require a rebuilding of the "party" from the inside out. Both parties are unacceptable as they now stand. Sort of like the alcoholic who says: "But I only drink on weekends!" In order to do that you need to have a political strategy to make it happen at national, state, and local levels. But first, before you even have that you need to have serious proposals to fix problems. How would you address healthcare, how would you address seemingly intractible poverty in certain communities, how would you address education: primary and higher, how would you provide for defense without walking all over liberty, what would be the role of prisons in a truly free society, one can go on... I would also submit that the proposals need to maximize free market approaches, but realize that government may need to be crafted to accomplish that move. The primary reason is often cited: government is already so thoroughly entrenched in so many areas of life that it is hard so say just how much distortion has been created over the generations. Example: to oppose any mass transit because it involves taxes and government planning can be disingenious when you consider the direct and indirect governmental subsidies given the auto industry through the various highway bills. If that had not happened, would urban areas have created market-based private transit systems decades ago? I tend to think they would have.
If the government had not distorted the market with highway funds and subsidized home buying in the suburbs, would we be discussing urban sprawl today, probably not.
