The struggle between decentralist right of self determionation clashing with the higher goal of liberty, broadly practiced, has always been a problem. In the American experience, if the Confederates had been about decentralism and slavery had not been in the equation, their "cause" might have had some merit. However, the slave system condemned their cause to holding a contradictory set of values (i.e. the freedom to have slaves) which could not have held over time. To make matters worse, over time, overt racists have wrapped themselves in the symbols of the Confederacy to the point they are indistinguishable--they have even added a few cute little things like the Nazi salute, etc. Other countries have had their own battles with the freedom to have non-free people. That is whereI have come to believe that if the goal advances freedom for the greatest number, it is most likely the best choice. The right of Bolivians to kill tall blondes because it is great fun and no one is hurt, except a few tall blondes, does not go down well because it is part of our right of self determination to kill tall blondes. So it is very Liberatarian for Iraq to be three countries and that is the Exit Signal for the American Ground Troops. Not even close. The few blacks that wanted to be slaves where provided jobs more so than many are today. They really did not have to stay and work for Slave Wages just as many especially in the big cities do not do so today but make their living in other ways not usually considered legal. Many blacks in the south developed or brought with them from Africa valuable skills and were treated with respect especially in the Charlston S.
