The real issue with the pledge should be that students are being
encouraged to say the pledge. Even if the pledge had not been amended
with the words "under God", students should not be coerced into
reciting it. Students at a young age do not understand the
significance of the pledge and say it just because their teacher tells
them to. By the time they get older it has become a habit and they
don't even think about it because it has simply become something that
is done that one does without even thinking about why. It is like
brushing one's teeth in the morning. Although we know why we do it has
become such a habit that we don't think, " I better brush my teeth so
that they stay healthy", we simply do it. We also eat dessert last
because that to has become a habit. Why not eat dessert first? You
have probably never considered doing that because you always eat
dessert after you are finished the rest of your meal.
What I find disturbing about students being told to say the pledge is
that students in National Socialist Germany were required to salute
the National Socialist flag and pledge allegiance to the state of
Germany. The fascist government in Italy during that era also did that
as well but many did not care as long as the trains ran on time.
