The House and Senate came to an agreement on the USA Patriot Act late
yesterday and the subject will be coming up for a vote shortly. The Patriot
Act is scheduled to end at the close of this year and some with to keep it
rolling on. Below I have copied a letter I faxed to my two U.S. Senators and
my U.S. Representative. If you feel the same way I hope you will do the
same. I have included fax# information for our two Florida senators (if you
live in another state you can look it or their email up at
www.congress.org). As well you will need to look up your U.S. Representative
at the same place. I hope you will take the five minutes to do this TODAY!
And if you feel differently, then of course feel free to forward your

Senator Mel Martinez
United States Senate
317 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510-3603
Dear Senator Mel Martinez,
Subject: Let Patriot Act Sunset
I understand an agreement has been made between the House and Senate to make
the USA Patriot Act permanent. The First, Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth
amendments were seriously diluted, and recently, the Seventh and 10th were
seriously damaged with the second Patriot Act. It is also my understanding
many of the sections that concern me most about the Patriot Act have not
been resolved.
Just a few examples are Section 203 B and D would become permanent under
this new deal allowing information to flow unrestricted within the
government creating massive databases of American who are not targets of
criminal investigations. Section 213 is the most egregious with its sneak &
peak warrants and would become permanent. This section permits the
government, even in cases not including terrorism/espionage, to enter an
Americans home without notification. Section 206 allowing roving wiretaps
would be extended for four more years. This section could lead to an
innocent American to have their cell phone, computer, telephone, etc. tapped
simply if they have a casual connection with a suspect (i.e. neighbor,
tennis partner, etc.). The Patriot Act is actually very UNpatriotic.
Allowing the government to view our Internet surfing and checking our e-mail
is clearly unconstitutional.
o
In conclusion, our founding fathers would insist on another Revolution if
they saw what is happening to our country today. It is clear the executive
branch has far too much unchecked authority nearly negating any thought to
the separation of powers that has made this country great. Do the right
thing for your country when it comes time to vote, vote to let the USA
Patriot Act sunset.
Best regards,
Karl N. Dickey
