Volume III, Issue #786
Friday, December 9th, 2005
Email Circulation 2,070

Dear readers,

Surprise! It's a "web-only Friday" for several reasons which I'll get
to in a moment. Today's news and 35 commentaries (including pieces
from Radley Balko, Aaron Biterman, John Hood, Justin Raimondo, Tim
Cavanaugh, Ron Paul, Helen Szamuely, Tibor R. Machan, SARTRE, Per
Bylund, Chris Adamo, Fred Reed, me and many others) are now available at:

http://www.rationalreview.com/news

Why is it a "web-only" day? Because that seems to work best when I'm
trying to get your undivided attention. I'd like to cover three things
as briefly as possible ... and actually have them read.

1) New feature -- here and coming

Immediately below my message in today's email, you'll find a
blocked-out area designated "Editors' Gift Picks." Today, those picks
are from yours truly. Over the next week or so, you'll be hearing from
RRND/FND's other editors with recommendations for your Christmas (or
other holiday) shopping, in similar blocks which will appear between
the "news" and "commentary" sections of your daily email. Two sides to
that coin, of course -- heads, we want to help our readers find neat
pro-freedom stuff as gifts for their friends and loved ones; tails,
some of the links generate affiliate commissions for our editors.

This is a temporary feature -- but it presages a new one. When we kick
off our fourth year of publishing RRND, we're going to start including
links to the books, DVDs, etc. which are mentioned in RRND/FND in a
"MediaShelf" block in the same place each day. Those links appear
"inline" in the web edition, of course, but we want to make it easier
(see reasons above) for our email readers to order things they find
interesting.

2) Fundraiser update

We have now raised $808 toward our goal of $3,000 for this quarter
($60 from two contributors yesterday -- thanks, R and L!). Making our
overall goal is beginning to look a bit iffy -- but we can still set
interim goals and push on. This weekend, I'd like to see that total go
from $808 to more than $1,000. If you've been thinking about returning
some "value for value" on your daily news and commentary roundup,
now's the time. Keep this in mind: If every one of RRND/FND's email
subscribers kicked in _one dollar_, we'd more than double our total
goal (although the PayPal fees would eat into it in a big way at that
particular amount -- but we're talking gross, not net, here!). Can we
count on 7,500+ readers to cough up at total of $192 this weekend and
$2,192 over the next three weeks? I'd like to think so. For more
information on how to support our continued publication, point your
browser at:

3) New advertising rates

If you sell a product or service, or want to promote a project, we
deliver an attentive libertarian audience at a bargain basement price.
Our new permanent advertising rates are dirt cheap -- and your ad
reaches our 7,500+ email readers plus every visitor to every page on
Rational Review's site. Lowball estimate: Your one-week ad will be
seen more than 40,000 times. To get your message in front of our
audience, visit any page at www.rationalreview.com and click on the
"advertise here" link in the right sidebar (yes, right below the ads).

Have a great weekend, and we'll be back Monday ... if not before.

Yours in liberty,
Tom Knapp

----- EDITORS' GIFT PICKS --------------------------------------------

Tom Knapp's recommendations:

THE BLACK ARROW, by Vin Suprynowicz
Hands-down the novel of the year -- and Liberty Book Shop is offering
a great deal. Buy the leather-bound edition, or two of the paperback
editions, as a gift and get a plain-cover "review copy" for yourself!
While you're there, treat yourself to more of Vin's work and a
complete collection of Bill Brannon's superb novels and other good stuff.

TOM PAINE MARU, by L. Neil Smith
Smith's hard-to-find classic novel, now available in its original,
uncut form as an Internet download. I've been unable to find a "splash
page" for TPM, so I'm sending you to The Libertarian Enterprise -- the
cover art and purchase link are located on the front page of the site.

THE PROBABILITY BROACH, graphic novel by L. Neil Smith and Scott Bieser
A beautifully realized adaptation of Smith's first novel. And the pogo
sticks? Don't ask.

A DRUG WAR CAROL, graphic novel by Susan Wells and Scott Bieser
You can read this online at www.adrugwarcarol.com, but the print
version makes a great gift for your friends who just don't get it ...
and the price is very, very right.

EQUILIBRIUM, DVD
Before he became Batman, Christian Bale was Cleric John Preston --
kicking a$$ and taking names in this imperfect but engrossing science
fiction story: "In a future where freedom is outlawed outlaws will
become heroes."

FREEDOM: "LIVING IT" VERSUS "TALKING IT"
Over 6,500 of us say, "Go for the real thing!" Propaganda from public
schools, the old media, and government itself make true liberty an
electoral non-starter today. Those of us who believe in individual
freedom are a small minority. The solution? The Free State Project.
We're up to it. Are you?
