Dear readers, Better late than never, right? Today is RRND's 800th edition, and it's a "web-only" for several reasons. More on that in a minute. First, the URL: http://www.rationalreview.com/news And next, a big thanks to JR, DT, RS, P &KAW, CG, KS and MR, who contributed a total of $118 in "value returned for value" over the last 24 hours to bring our quarterly fundraiser total to $2,505 ... just $495 short of our goal! Thanks to all of you, and let's close this thing out! Woke up this morning and I got myself a b ... no, not really. Woke up this morning and couldn't connect to the Internet. No no-way, not no-how. This has happened on occasion before. It always takes awhile to figure out if the problem is a) software, b) hardware, c) phone line or d) ISP. In this case it was that last one -- and one time too many. But if you can't get on the net to Google it, finding a _new_ ISP means using the Yellow Pages and hoping someone's at the office between Christmas and the New Year. At 4 a.m. Not happening, people. I spent four hours and change alternating between seeing if my old ISP was back up yet (it never was) and calling numbers that led to voice-mail boxes or to people who'd never heard of Linux and who weren't interested in selling Internet service to someone using it instead of Windows. Anyway, Net-Hero.Com answered the phone, had the account set up in ten minutes and I was back in business ($9.95 a month unlimited dialup, the connection seems good, and no, I don't get an affiliate commission). Of course, being five hours behind (and with a dying computer -- hopefully the new one will arrive today, tomorrow or Friday!), I didn't have time to bulk out the edition as I'd really like, but after 799 issues without a miss, I wasn't about to just let it slide. So, 20 news stories and 27 commentaries (with more possibly coming -- but remember, a lot of our sources are effectively taking the week off) await you. It's late. It's lean. But it's here. Thanks to all of our readers for three years, 800 issues and a lot more to come.
