How many parents do you think would seek to have their children unable to compete or hold a decent job?
Do you think science is dependent upon the government defining a curriculum? I think you underestimate people of faith. Mennonites and Amish people have managed pretty well to keep a minimalist lifestyle in a modern world. If every school teaches a different curriculum, how would we guarantee that, as a nation, we're competitive enough to maintain our leadership in a knowledge-based global economy? For instance, Kansas children would probably be ill-prepared for R&D jobs as they would believe the universe is only 5000 years old and they would not really believe the laws of physics apply outside the Earth. What if other communities taught children that prayer is a better problem-solving methodology than the scientific method? Would they pray to Jesus to flip their burger patties for them or would they use the standard-issue spatula? Who would ask "Would you like fries with that...?" Jesus, or would they do it themselves? I know what I'm saying goes against libertarian dogma and I'm probably going to be accused of not being libertarian enough. I do believe government can play a role in implementing the strategic need for a nation to maintain an educated populace. I believe education is crucial to a nation's prosperity. An ignorant populace cannot be free. I believe liberty can only be safeguarded and nurtured when the population is educated enough to know the difference. Fear is tyranny's weapon of choice but it only works on ignorant people. Look what happens when people elect C-students into office for cryin' out loud.
