Immigration rally at the Texas Capitol
4/10/2006 10:48 PM
By: Hermelinda Vargas

Demonstrators came in groups, but stood together for
one cause: to promote what they call a "path to legalization" for undocumented
immigrants and to defeat national legislation that they say is unfair.

They are particularly opposed to legislation that would criminalize
undocumented immigrants. In particular, a U.S. House Bill, HR 4437.

  Immigration nation
Salon.com
by Richard Rodriguez

"The crowds parading up the streets of America on Monday, and for the last
two weeks, have been telling us with their bodies, if not always in English,
that illegal immigrants are not alone in the United States of America. Indeed,
illegal immigrants, who were supposed to live a shadowy existence, belong to
neighborhoods and to church congregations that were willing to stand alongside
them. And most important: Many millions of illegal immigrants have U.S.
relatives, sons and daughters, in-laws, cousins, grandchildren. That family tie
is the lesson of these parades." [subscription or ad view required] (04/11/06)
