Yes, it is disturbing and lends credibility to the deconstructionist
and post-modernist movement prevalent in the academic community. 
There was an author who wrote a book about 3 years ago claiming
Lincoln was a homosexual.  His claim was based solely on lincoln's
letters to and from friends.  Yet, as he was not a trained historian,
he failed to recognize Lincoln's use of verbage as the common use of
verbage.  Thus, words that may appear to have one meaning render a
completely different meaning when placed within their historical
context.
