While we can maintain that all humans are persons (if not so severely
brain-damaged that they are "dead" for most practical purposes), it does not
follow that other beings with humanlike attributes should not be considered
persons. For example,

- Space aliens
- Genetically enhanced animals with human-level intelligence and ability to
communicate (if only using sign language)
- Synthetic humans or robots ("androids")

Science fiction has explored the acceptance of all of these as persons, and if a
person is a "role" then we must accept that other things than biological humans
should be considered persons if they are functionally equivalent in some sense.
