Most history books say that the War of Yankee Agression ended on April 9, 1865 when General lee surrendered to Grant in Appomattox, VA. There were a few battles faught after General Lee surrendered the Army of Northern VA however. The last Rebel general who surrendered was General Stand Watie who surrendered on June 23, 1865. General Watie was a Cherokee Indian and the only American Indian on either side of the war to become promoted to the rank of Brig. General. On June 23, 1865 General Watie road into Doaksville, OK near Ft. Townson and surrendered his men who were mostly Indians to the the U.S. army. That event on that day was really the day hostilities between the two sides ended. A photo of a painting of General Watie's surrender: http://www.oksenate.gov/senate_artwork/surrender_of_general_stand_wat ie.jpg Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the marker that commemorates Stand Watie. There is also a photo of the house Sequoyah lived in. http://www.cville.com/members/ridenour/markers.htm HR --- End forwarded message --- ------------------------ Yahoo!
