Good post, Paul, and as usual spot-on in your analysis. I agree with your assessment of religion. I'm not big on religion either, in fact I find it as ridiculous as you do, however of the three so-called monotheistic religions I'd have to say the least violent and least abhorant of the three would be the Hebrew religion. Christianity and Islam have as key tenants- prostylization, and as history has shown, it has many times been carried through with force and murder. Judiasm does not seek to prostylize, it is against their tenants actually, if one wants to become a Jew he must first voluntarily become one. Over the last 2 melliniums, only Christians and Muslims have butchered each other, and those (often Jews) who stood in their way, while Judiasm never warred against anyone, only fought to survive and be left alone. In so-called Biblical times, it had violence attached to it, but who knows how accurate the Biblical history is - I think early 'Christians' fabricated much of it to give Jews another black eye and justify their persecution of them. Also, Judiasm tends to be a lot more secular minded in its outlook on the world and life in general. There are a few (some orthodox sects for instance), but as a rule you won't find fanatical Jews. Can't say that about Christianity or Islam, both of which lends themselves to fanaticism, backwardness, and ignorance. In some ways, Judiasm is closer to philosophy than it is to religion, other than having a deity anyway.
