They had a League of Nations (later UN) "mandate" to keep order, an unfortunate consequence of the stupidities in Paris. 1919. Since the UK was never the legitimate owner, they could not give the land to Israel. The Palestinians had been living there for well over a thousand years. They had homestead rights, and deeds from the Turkish Empire, which "owned" the land pre-1919. If war destroys previous titles, then Israel has no right to claim title on the grounds that God gave it to them. They lost that title several wars ago. If might makes right, and ownership by conquest is legitimate, there are "civilized" ways to do it. (1) You give it back after the war, perhaps in exchange for something of value, or (2) you take title, and the inhabitants become citizens of the new ruler country. (Reference the results of Franco-Prussian war) The third option, colonization and/or genocide, is pretty much out of fashion these days. Setting up settlements and reducing the locals to second-class status has given both Israel and South Africa a bad name. The US, and many others, pressed sanctions against apartheit South Africa. What did South Africans do to non-whites which Israel has not done to non-Jews? Moral consistency would suggest....
