In many voting districts in the United State, elections boards got tired (or at least that was the excuse) of counting votes for "Mickey Mouse" so they simply eliminated the write in line on most election "contests" (and then voided the ballots which were "defaced" by people - like me - who wrote in names in the margins) - pretty much forcing people to vote for the government-approved candidates (or better yet, not vote at all).
