About 60 came to the hospitality suite to launch the weekend-long convention.
Some celebs including: Maine State Representative Ken Lindell, Georgia County
Executive Ben Brandon, Bob Burg, Paul Jacob, and various candidates for office,
mostly in Florida.
Phil Blumel gave an excellent welcoming speech in which he outlined the goals
of the libertarian Republican movement. RLC National Chair Bill Westmiller
also chimed in.
There was a well-represented, t-shirt donned, contingent from the Fair Tax
group; about 7 of them, handing out brochures.
I think I also caught Libertarian candidate for Governor John Wayne Smith
lurking around in a bright red t-shirt hawking his campaign.
Interestingly, practically everyone there was ex-Libertarian Party. Not many
mainline Republicans. But maybe that'll be different today.
Had the pleasure of going out to a late night dinner with Lindell and
Westmiller. We got horribly lost on the way to a Steak joint on Orange Blossom
Trail. So, we decided to skip the Steak joint that Lindell had his heart set
on and go to Tony Roma's near the hotel.
Lindell is in a touch reelection battle for his Maine seat. He only won by
35 votes last time.
Other observation: Most of the attendees were from Florida and Georgia.
There were a couple from California, one guy from Maryland, a few from Virginia
and North Carolina. Oh, and a nice couple representing the Free State Project
from New Hampshire.
Nobody there from the Mid-West, Mountain West or Southwest as far as I could
tell.
And Chuck Moulton, Vice-Chairman of the National Libertarian Party is
scheduled to arrive today.
Phil confirmed that Katherine Harris is indeed coming this evening for the
banquet. The keynote speaker will be Stephen Moore of the WSJ and Club for
Growth.
