Jasmine,

This might be off-topic, but on some recovery forums (I won't
name names) there is an enforced "atmosphere" of coddling the
fragile "recoverers". You can't directly disagree with their bs
because it might upset them too much; of course they have a lot
of bs because they bring so much fallacy with them from the place
they are trying to recover. So what the members do is slip in a
lot of passive-aggressive digs and "polite" logical fallacies to
each other. There are many logical fallacies thrown about, but of
course the most common is ad hominem, especially when someone
disagrees too directly and too often. Direct rebuttals are
classified as insults and are seen as good reason to truly insult
the poster, eventually getting him ejected after too many fragile
members complain. Essentially everyone is easily-offended and you
have to walk on eggshells. Reason and logic are out the door.
This AA-type mentality is a disaster for intellectual discussion
and real recovery.

Is that similar to your experience?

I have just been lurking here, but now you have peaked my
curiosity.

I have been on some recovery sites lately myself and I was
wondering what kind of logical fallacies you found on such
forums.

  Just curious.

Please post more like that. I love learning common logical
fallacies. I think learning them should be as fundamental as
multiplication tables. I think they are the future of internet
(and non-internet) debate; making it much more scientific and
mathematical. Knowing them by heart and recognizing them would
save so much time. Do you have a good link to a list / glossary /
dictionary (other than wikipedia)?

I was in a recovery forum here a while back and decided to call
out every logical fallacy I saw. There were so many, that the
group started insulting me and eventually ejected me; without
rebutting a single point I made. Like I said, it can save a lot
of time (revealed the true color of the group and its moderator
very quickly).

I think it's very relevant because universal libertarianism is
essentially the same thing: recognizing all the logical fallacies
in other political philosophies. After you weed out all the
fallacies, you are left with a more logical / reasonable /
legitimate / valid / scientific philosophy.

This is the logical fallacy of The False Dichotomy. It presents
two extreme opposing choices as the only ones when in reality
there are many.
