(October 11, 2006) - David Schlosser, the Libertarian candidate for Arizona's first district in the U.S. House of Representatives, today announced he would oppose all Congressional salary increases until the Federal government balances its budget. If members receive pay raises despite his opposition, Schlosser said he would send the balance to the U.S. Treasury to help pay off the national debt. "The Federal government cooks its books to hide the true and terrifying size of the budget deficit, estimated at more than ten times the bureaucratic numbers," Schlosser said. "Our $8.4 trillion national debt is a burden on our children that will severely limit the opportunities of future Americans." Schlosser is an advocate of a Constitutional amendment to require that Congress pass a balanced budget. In a column published earlier this year, Schlosser pointed out that "if you knew that the government's real deficit since 1997 is running $2.9 trillion - or, $40 trillion if you want to include the costs of Social Security and Medicare just for grins - you might start expecting Congress to do something about it." (http://www.schlosserforcongress.com/media-press/op-ed/060809_Enumerating_in sanity.php) "Until the Federal government uses the same accounting standards it requires of its citizens and their employers, we'll never know how to balance the budget," Schlosser said. "Until we really balance the budget, no member of Congress deserves a pay raise." # # # Libertarian candidate for U.S. Congress David Schlosser, 38, lives in Flagstaff, Ariz., where he is a writer and communications consultant and has been a part-time instructor in the School of Communications at Northern Arizona University.
