Until the invasion of Cambodia by 150,000 US and South Vietnamese troops a month later, the Khmer Rouge were active only in the eastern provinces - and even there had little support. The invasion drove them throughout the country and increased their ranks from a few thousand to several tens of thousands in just a short time. I suppose Eric owes a debt of thanks to the Vietnamese communists for invading Cambodia and engaging in "regime change" against the Khmer Rouge in 1979.
