Unfortunately, sometimes the penalty for quitting is to have your co-workers killed by the enemy. That is why the military contract differs fundamentally from almost all others. The penalty is proper as long as the contract is voluntary and the war is constitutionally declared, is necessary to protect the American people in the United States and not based on lies. Of course, the Iraq war fails this test on all counts.

Find a job where the penalty for not showing up for work or quitting is trial and years in jail Wonder how it would reshape military policy is military "service" were like any other job, where one was free to quit at will at any moment? This would seem to me to be the libertarian position. Then presumably lots of people would quit if they thought a war was stupid and had nothing to do with defending their own families. If the only thing that would happen when you quit is that you might be barred from other government employment and might lose your pension or benefits, but you could not be declared awol and tried and jailed.
