Why anyone would turn their own flesh and blood over to the Public Screwl
system is beyond me.

Before I moved to Texas I had heard all these horror stories about how kids who
are Homeschooled don't get as good

a social development as those in Public Screwls and nothing could be further
from the truth based on the Homeschoolers I have met.

Not only do Homeschoolers behave far better than their Public Screwl
counterparts but they are far more curious about learning

and far more likely to not be cowed by authority (specifically public
authority).

They are also more likely to treat their parents with respect even in spite of
their mistrust of public authority.

No wonder this guy wants to his hands on these kids, and money for public
schools is only partly the reason.

Board president makes appeal to homeschoolers

ONTONAGON -- Ontonagon Area Board of Education President Dean
Juntunen made an appeal Monday for homeschoolers to enroll their children in
the Ontonagon Area School District.

Juntunen explained that due to a loss of student population this
year and inadequate state funding, "we will be using up our financial cushion."

He continued, "However, we will survive this year, and for next
year we have a plan to cut our expenses. This includes reductions in
administration, teaching and support staff. The good news is we can handle the
big cuts in staff through attrition. We will not planning on cutting programs,
and our school will remain strong."

Juntunen continued that the district worries, "because state
funding has been flat in recent years and there is a tendency to cut funding in
mid-year, which is something we can't budget for."

He said it also does not appear there will be an increase in
student population.

He then appealed to home schooled families.

"I encourage you to contact the school and see what we have to
offer. We've got an excellent administrative team in place, and an excellent
teaching staff and an excellent support staff. Our board and administration has
shown that we will do our best to take care of people. Likewise, the people of
the Ontonagon Area School District will do their best to take care of our
children."

Juntunen concluded, "My last point is that a strong public school
is critical to a strong community, and if you enroll your children, you will be
providing for community service."

It is estimated that more than 25 children are home schooled in
Ontonagon County.
