Dear readers,

It's "web-only Monday" at RRND ... and it's more complicated than that, as I'll
explain below. To start with, today's only web edition is the FND edition at
ISIL:

http://www.isil.org/fnd

... and it's short and oddly formatted. Ten news stories, ten commentaries.

Even after its server move, Rational Review continues to experience
difficulties with our hosting. I've been up since 4 a.m. trying to get those
difficulties resolved, and will probably be up late tonight as well. No
problem, but you're due an explanation.

First things first: IT'S NOT MONEY. During one of our recent outages, our
re-seller received a number of emails due to the "site suspended" message. Some
were just plain nastygrams, some were offers to pay for our hosting if we were
behind. We weren't behind, it wasn't the re-seller's fault that we were down,
and we appreciate those offers ... but that's not what's been at issue. Just so
that you know, our re-seller is (was -- see below) Brad Spangler, who's also on
our editorial board and who has bent over backwards to accomodate our needs.
The standard "suspended" messages tend to imply that bills haven't been paid,
but that's just not the case ... the hosting fee for this month was one penny
(a first-month promotion), and I happily forked it over in advance!

Last week, the issue was that we were working the hosting service's mySQL
server too hard. Fixed.

Then it was that we were up against our re-seller's (Brad's) maximum bandwidth
quota. Brad had extended us the use of his own excess bandwidth until he had to
upgrade his own account to continue accomodating us. In any case, fixed ... and
not just fixed, but we went ahead and moved to a much larger direct account to
free up his resources, and to ensure that we had adequate resources for our
current and projected growth as well.

Now, it's ... well, we aren't sure. Once again, the host has shut us down
without notice, citing a fairly cryptic complaint. We THINK we know what they
mean (essentially that some spammers have been working their servers trying to
hijack our site, and failing but using resources in the attempt), but we're not
sure ... and apparently their "24 hour support" blurb means that it takes 24
hours to get support. We can't fix what we think they're bellyaching about
until the site is made accessible again, and so far it's been close to 24
hours, with multiple phone calls and emails on my part and no substantive
response either to clarify their complaint or to let us work on fixing it. Much
of what was supposed to be today's edition is still trapped in that big bundle
of evil.

In case it hasn't hit you yet, I'm a bit wroth with this hosting service ...
and if things don't take a turn for the better, I'll be going to war with them.
I'll abstain from publicly naming them for the moment, in the hope that this
can be worked out, though.

So ... Our 1,081st edition is short, web-only and hosted elsewhere, but it's
here. And tomorrow's will be as well. Sorry for the inconvenience. We'll be
back tomorrow -- hopefully at full strength, but one way or another, we'll be
here.

Yours in liberty,
Tom Knapp
