Notes:

- Are you getting tired of reading my plugs for ISIL's 26th World Freedom
Summit yet? No? Good. The conference's theme is "Refounding of America" and
it's sure to be a memorable event. August 11-15 in Williamsburg, Virginia. Be
there:

- I spent the weekend in Chicago -- among other things, hanging out with ISIL
president Vince Miller. It was less a formal "meeting" than a series of
brainstorming sessions interspersed with tourist rubbernecking, doing lunch
with a couple of the movement's leading lights (Joe and Diane Bast of the
Heartland Institute -- www.heartland.org), and so forth. We came up with some
exciting ideas for future ISIL projects, and you can expect to see some of
those ideas move from theory to practice shortly.

On the touristy side, Murphy's Law was in full operation. After spending two
hours sitting on the El ("hey, it'll be quicker than driving downtown" -- I
guess I should have heeded libertarian theory on the efficacy of public transit
instead of going with the conventional wisdom), we only had time to visit one,
rather than two, museums. My family hit the Field Museum while Vince and I
toured Heartland's headquarters (they're expanding!); we re-connected just as
the museum closed, although I did get a glimpse of Sue the T-Rex through the
main entrance.

We had a fabulous dinner down in the Loop area (the place is called Ada's --
they've apparently stopped offering gefilte fish, but my pastrami on rye was
marvelous, and they had Stella Artois on draft; the hoppel poppel and challah
grilled cheese sandwich got good reviews from my kids, and a family friend who
was traveling with us raved over the chopped liver). Lots of walking around the
general area of Wells and Lake ... but no, I didn't find an exit. Fortunately,
the agents turned out to be uniformed cops zooming around on Segways, which
just seems, um, wrong.

On Sunday, prior to driving back, I decided to wade into Lake Michigan and add
it to my "bodies of water I have nearly drowned in" list (previously consisting
of the Atlantic, the Pacific, the Persian Gulf, Lake Isabella and some other
less noted lakes, ponds, rivers and streams). I managed, it, sort of -- at
least I think that was the lake around my feet after the snow and ice broke
under me and dropped me in knee-deep. Call me a Polar Cub Clubber ... I just
wasn't up for the full immersion.

After that, it was off to Waldheim Cemetery to visit the graves of Emma Goldman
and the Haymarket martyrs ... but, alas, the cemetery was closed and its gates
locked by the time we pulled up. Next time.

Speaking of next time, we'll be back tomorrow with the regular email edition.

Yours in liberty,
Tom Knapp
