Today in the U.S.A. there is suposedly taxation with representation.
I say supposedly because there is this idea that elected politicians
represent the interests of those who elected them. Pershaps they do
represent some of those who elected them but generally they
represent those who got them elected via campaign contributions.
Also those who did not vote for them generally don't think they the
pols who got elected are representing their interests. Many who
voted for the winners of elections may not get what they want even
if the candidate they voted for wins and keeps his or her promise to
do or not do what their voters wanted because there are other
members of congress who will vote against them. Some people think
that taxation with representation is better than taxation without
representation. If one is opposed to a particular tax then how does
the fact that the people who voted for the particular tax were voted
into office by some who may support the tax make it ok for those who
are in opposition to the tax? Suppose you vote for a candidate who
campaigns on a promise of not voting to increases taxes. Even if
that candidate is elected and does not vote for tax increases that
does not garantee there will be no tax increases because the
majority of the other members of congress might vote for tax
increases. Today in the U.S.A. the American people are taxed more
than ever and they supposedly have taxation with representation. The
Americans of 18th century colonial America who rebeled against
taxation without representation were taxed far less than Americans
are today. Today under the system of supposedly taxation with
representation americans are forced by government to pay for things
they not only don't want to pay for but things that the government
is not authorized to spend monies from the treasury on. Just because
a member of congress was elected does not mean that it is ok for him
or her to spend monies from the treasury on things that the
Constitution does not authorize congress to spend monies on or to
spend monies in ways that many Americans do not approve of. Congress
should only spend monies on what the Constitution specifically
authorizes. Also American soldiers should not be engaging in warfare
unless Congress has issued a declaration of war that nearly all
members have voted in favor of and only when war is justified to
defend the country.
