A Majority of One
Posted by Butler Shaffer at May 15, 2007 10:09 PM

Thoreau observed that "any man more right than his neighbors constitutes a
majority of one." Henry David must have foreseen Ron Paul's performance this
evening!

I don't know when I have seen a greater gaggle of the morally and
intellectually bankrupt than in the other 9/10ths of the so-called "debaters"
in this GOP sideshow. The platitudes and bromides that oozed from Giuliani,
Hunter, Romney, et. al., were given a sound jolt by Ron Paul's insistence upon
fact and reason. Giuliani's sycophantic brown-shirts in the audience cheered
his attack upon Paul for having stated what, by now, must be known to that
remnant of intelligent souls in the country - i.e., that American military
adventures throughout the Middle East have been the cause of Islamic anger
toward the U.S. The motto of the GOP establishment could well be taken from
Mark Twain, when he said: "truth is the most valuable thing we have. Let us
economize it."

And what of those who, on the abortion question, spoke of the "sanctity of
life," even as they praised the continuation of a war against innocent people,
their lives being snuffed out by the scores on any given day? Do the
conservatives fear the depletion of the supply of fetuses who would otherwise
grow up to be cannon fodder for their imperialistic wars? Furthermore, those
who spoke with an iron-fisted self-righteousness about the "illegal immigrants"
who come to this country peacefully, to work, could not understand Ron Paul's
contention that American soldiers entering Iraq illegally, and for violent,
destructive purposes, would likewise raise the anger of Iraqis.

One of the yahoo candidates concluded that America was the last hope for
civilization. It has been my contention that Western Civilization is in a state
of entropic free-fall. Listening to this crowd - Ron Paul excluded - convinced
me that I am right. A society that can cheer both "American Idol" and Rudy
Giuliani has a bleak future indeed.
