Maybe Lincoln gets an unnecessarily bad rap. Perhaps his interest in "saving
the union" over anything having to do with slavery was to prevent the
balkanization of the American continent in a manner that has caused so much
trouble for 1,000 years in balkanized Europe. Consider his well-known remark
about whatever it would take to save the union, "freeing some of the slaves,
freeing all of the slaves, freeing none of the slaves...what the heck do I
care?"

Abraham Lincoln symbolizes a rather different idea - of America as a great
centralized nation-state, supposedly dedicated to individual freedom, but
founded on the unquestioned authority and power of the national government in
Washington.
