Maybe Lincoln gets an unnecessarily bad rap. Perhaps his interest in "saving the union" over anything having to do with slavery was to prevent the balkanization of the American continent in a manner that has caused so much trouble for 1,000 years in balkanized Europe. Consider his well-known remark about whatever it would take to save the union, "freeing some of the slaves, freeing all of the slaves, freeing none of the slaves...what the heck do I care?"
