Editorial in Monday's Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel: EMINENT DOMAIN Libertarian view is right I had a moment of political pride when I read the June 12 Journal Sentinel editorial "It's private property. You don't have to be a Libertarian to see something wrong in a city forcing a landowner to sell because it prefers another commercial use for the property."
It is nice to know that some view Libertarians as people who are just looking out for their fellow citizens. Eminent domain is one of our pet peeves, and what is going on in Milwaukee is as bad as it gets. The Common Council has an empty property because it so far has refused to allow an honest, private property owner the ability to try to be an entrepreneur and open a business: a restaurant/club. Now, it wants to add insult to injury by potentially stealing the land from the owner. As the editorial states, you shouldn't have to be a Libertarian to see how wrong this is. But being one myself, it sometimes feels like we are the only ones who do see it. The only blight here is the one Milwaukee is getting nationwide, thanks to its proposed land grab. I thank the Editorial Board for seeing the right side of this issue as I hope the Common Council will as well. Brad Sponholz Greenfield ***
