In point of fact, the 'Students' and the rest of the protesters
were not 'led to believe' anything.

This was a very spontaneous uprising and they were fully
aware of the risks and expected what happened to be the
most likely end result.

I would know, because I have spoken with these people
both before and after, and it's not some fake mass twitter.

I do believe that Israel would love to take advantage of
the situation and time their attack on Iran's nukes to
match the unrest, however.

The Israelis are quite satisfied with their Intel Network
there and are not actively trying to politically intervene.

Why would the Israeli government try to fake the size of the resistance
in Iran? Well, it appears they wanted to attack Iran, and hoped the US
would go along with another "war of liberation". The Israeli government
aimed their propaganda not actually toward Iran, but toward the US. CLG news
writes that they asked Obama to approve attacking Iran at the time, but he
did not agree:

Report: Israel planned to strike Iran during riots
07 Aug 2009

Israel last month asked the United State for permission to attack Iran's
nuclear facilities, Kuwaiti newspaper al-Jarida reported on Friday. The
paper quoted a "US diplomatic source located in Jerusalem", but the report's
credibility was not confirmed. According to the sources, after the
opposition riots 'broke out' in Iran following June's presidential election
results, Israel asked the US government for a green light to strike the
country's nuclear facilities, along with other vital facilities in Iran. The
source added that the Obama administration ignored the Israeli request, that
was sent by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with President Shimon Peres's
signature as well.

The students in Iran were lead to believe they could change their
government. In fact, their government could just beat them and lock them
up. All this happened just so you and I, the US electorate, would see and
approve of an attack on their country.
