It should be pointed out what the flag was. it was not the flag of Texas, signifying independence, or the flag of the United States. It was a simple blue flag with the digits "1824" on it, signifying the Mexican Constitution of 1824, that Santa Anna was then violating. The defenders of the Alamo were not fighting for independence. That would be declared later, on March 2, 1836. They were fighting to restore compliance with a constitution.
