The behavior of timeouts with EV_PERSIST is not well documented and somewhat counter intuitive; see http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1831173&group_id=50884&atid=461325 You might also want to use a more recent version of libevent as 1.3b is over a year old.
