Follow up: the current libusb implementation for Mac OS X did not support this use case. See http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lib.libusb.devel.general/7270 The issue has been quickly addressed and fixed up by Nathan, and will be available in the next libusb official release, I guess.
